Will My Parents Car Insurance Policy Cover Me?
Will My Parents Car Insurance Policy Cover Me?
Q: I live with my parents and every once in a while I need to use their car. I don’t have car insurance of my own so I was wondering if my parents insurance policy covered me driving their car?
AIS Answer: Usually yes. Nearly every auto insurance policy that does not list an excluded driver (SEE: Named Driver Exclusion) will cover any licensed driver that operates the insured vehicle.
If your parents have you listed on their policy, then yes of course you’re covered in case of an accident. If you’re on their policy as a Named Driver Exclusion then you absolutely are not allowed to drive the vehicle. However, in both cases you would likely know if it applied to you.
This is one of those really gray areas in the insurance industry, where you can’t give advice. No insurance company wants extra drivers on their policy without added compensation, yet, they must provide the coverage for any driver that is allowed to operate the vehicle by the insured. My suggestion would be to talk with your parents about their insurance plan and review the coverages, then, contact a local independent insurance agent and ask them a few questions about coverage. They may be able to give you advice, and definitively tell you if you’re covered or not.

don’t most car insurance policies cover children?
I was covered under my parents insurance policy as a teenager and they never even mentioned my name to the insurance company.
