Q: What are the PIP states in the U.S?

AIS Answer: There are 12 states in the U.S. that require you to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP).

Florida (currently expired in Oct. 2007, will reinstate Jan 1. 2008)
Hawaii
Kansas
Kentucky
Massachusetts
Michigan
Minnesota
New Jersey
New York
North Dakota
Pennsylvania
Utah

PIP insurance covers helps cover medical bills up to the amount of coverage. For instance, required coverage in Florida is $10,000 and other states as well.

There are many detractors (including the insurers) that would like to see auto insurance laws return to the basic form because PIP claims have risen substantially and PIP is very susceptible to fraud.

If you live in a PIP state, check with your insurance agent about basic requirements and how much adding PIP to your auto insurance premium will cost.

    1. Nice to see Oregon isn’t a PIP state for regular auto insurance, but, if you get commercial auto insurance (business car insurance) PIP is mandatory in Oregon. In fact, I think it’s even $20,000 coverage! It doesn’t cost much though.
