Q: I live full time in Mexico and have Mexican insurance on both of my vehicles.
Both vehicles are registered in the U.S. and our drivers licenses are U.S. We
make two month long trips to the U.S. each year and always have trouble getting
insurance. What can we do?
AIS Answer: If you’re a U.S. resident, and the vehicles are registered in the U.S., and you have a valid U.S. drivers license, the one thing that may be holding you up is the lack of current and consecutive U.S. auto insurance.
Insurance companies like to see at least 6 months previously insured and if you’re not keeping the auto insurance policy active and consecutively year-round, you’re likely to face higher rates and companies with strict underwriting standards may not insure you.
Another thing you may want to consider if you have the option is to keep an inexpensive vehicle in the U.S. full-time, with the proper U.S. auto insurance year round. This way there are no issues with garaging and driving the vehicle in another country.

get a car and leave it in the states. That’s got to be the easiest way around unless you have a friend that will let you use their car. Oh, and don’t forget the good old standby rental car. Sure it’s a bit more expensive, but you won’t have insurance issues.
definitely leave a car in the US or borrow from a friend. What a hassle!
