Turned 21 and My Car Insurance Didn’t Go Down
I know this isn’t much of a story, more of a rant, but I felt it needed to be said. There’s all this talk about how people start getting lower insurance rates once they turn 21. I know first hand, for males this isn’t the case.
When I turned 21 I had been driving for 4 years, no accidents and no speeding tickets. Although being a male may have been the real reason I didn’t save any money, my belief was that your insurance rate would be lowered slightly. My rates didn’t go up which was great, but they didn’t do anything and I thought there were milestones like getting married, turning 21 and 25, graduating from college, etc that would lower my premium.
A year or so later my girlfriend turned 21 and she was with State Farm, who I consider to be a great company but very expensive for younger male drivers, and her rates dropped?! What?! Although we both didn’t have speeding tickets or accidents, other than her being a female I don’t see how she got to save money. She was on a “good driver” or “safe driver” plan with them and that may have been some kind of reward for driving safely over a period of time but it was certainly nothing I hadn’t been doing.
