There are of course low cost vehicles under say $20,000 that will also fit the lower cost model, but these are the top ten cheapest cars in the U.S. and while for the most part compact in size the tradeoff is also great gas mileage and lower cost maintenance and repairs, which in turn means lower cost auto insurance.
Of course you don’t necessarily have to buy a cheap new car to find lower cost auto insurance, but, it doesn’t hurt to make it a little easier for the insurance company to put a lower value on some of their liability (your car) and make your total auto insurance bill lower.
A great trick before purchasing a vehicle is to get a few auto insurance quotes on each make/model of the car(s) you’re looking to buy. This way, if you have a toss up between a few different models you can make a decision based on your auto insurance bill.
As always, consult a licensed auto insurance agent or insurance company before making any decisions on your auto insurance plan.

so what you’re trying to say is “buy a cheap car that you don’t really want to be seen in and you could save money on car insurance?”. If that’s the case I’m sorry but all ten of these cars are so extremely lame I’ll take the $1,500 a year car insurance bill and enjoy driving.
I would NOT buy a Chevy Aveo, I don’t care if the insurance is $30 a month. It doesn’t surprise me that the top ten cheapest cars also happen to be the least desirable. Minus the Ford Focus, I don’t see a lot of people going for these cars even if they do save money.
Come on the Focus? The Aveo? the Yaris? Those cars wouldnt hold up to anything in a collision. The only possible way these cars could cost less for insurance companies is if enough people arent driving them…safety features or not, you’re in an econo-box pop can blowing across the road.
I wouldn’t buy anything on this list, especially the AVEO and Yaris. If you’ve seen one of these shartmobiles in action you’dknow what I mean…awful P.O.S.’s
what about the Smart for 2…I bet that’s cheap to insure.
