The Garage or The Street - Should I Tell My Insurance Company Where I Park My Car?

Please contact a licensed insurance company for advice specific to your situation.

Q: Should I tell my insurance company if I park my car on the street instead of a garage?

AIS Answer: Any licensed insurance agent will tell you that it’s your responsibility to notify your auto insurance company of where you park your vehicle. And falsifying information could lead to declined claims and cancellation of your auto insurance policy.

The reality is that insurance companies know you’re not always going to park your vehicle in a garage. There are malls, parking garages, and side streets people park on every day. What they are trying to protect against is theft at your home location.

Nearly every auto insurance company will ask you where you park you vehicle (the exact location/physical address) and if it’s “garaged” or not. There’s no way to know outside of looking at your insurance score to see how much your premium is affected by saying “outside” or “garaged”, but likely you’d save more money being a safe driver than you would telling an insurance company you park your car in a garage rather than outside.

Logic says that if you own a garage and you park outside and your car gets stolen than it’s hard to prove you don’t normally park in the garage. However if you live in an apartment and you don’t have a garage and you’re vehicle is stolen or damaged and you had said you park it in a garage, there’s a possibility your claim would be denied.

It’s best to talk to your local auto insurance agent to discuss your options regarding your auto insurance policy.
