Q: Who are the biggest car insurance companies?
AIS Answer: According to the Insurance Information Institute and the National Association of Insurance Commissions, the top ten leading auto insurance writers are in order…
2006 Auto Insurance Data (NAIC):
- State Farm Mutual Group
- Allstate Insurance Company Group
- Progressive Casualty  Group
- National Indemnity Co. Group
- Farmers Insurance Group
- Nationwide Group
- United Services Automobile Association Group (USAA)
- American International Group (AIG)
- Liberty Mutual Group
- American Family Insurance Group

I didn’t know how big State Farm was…wow. Progressive is certainly up there too, Allstate makes sense and so does Farmers, but USAA I never would have thought of.
USAA is a great company if you’re in the Air Force. Not sure who National Indemnity is, and the majority of these companies I’ve never used. Progressive is great. State Farm is a little bit more expensive (at least for me) but great service.
state farm is a HUGE insurance company, not a suprise that it’s tops on the list.
this list has nothing to do with which insurance company is the best.
what’s national indemnity? Never heard of them.
notice how most of these insurance companies have captive agents and huge marketing budgets? Not too mention, many of them are public companies. I guess it helps to take your insurance company public, hire thousands of captive agents in each state and run big advertising campaigns.
I can’t imagine that insurance rates from any of these companies would be inexpensive just because of the overhead involved in running such a large company
