After reading about all the insurance companies that don’t do enough for their customers, it’s nice to personally see that state farm takes care of their customers.
My girlfriend (and her father) have carried state farms insurance for as long as I’ve known them. And absolutely every issue was handled quickly and fairly. Her father at one point in time had a brand new 1997 Toyota Supra parked outside his garage and a large sheet of ice had fallen from the roof on to the rear quarter panel of the car. Obviously this was his fault for not parking in a garage, but, an accident is an accident and State Farm covered the cost of a complete repaint (I think it came to over $2,000). I’m not sure if State Farm Homeowners or Autombile¬¨‚Ć covered the damage because he had both his home and his cars insured through StateFarm – but either way it was taken care of quickly.
My girlfriend at the time had also had issues with cracks in her window and State Farm had them repaired free of charge. To this day I’ve never seen another company offer window repair free of charge.
My own personal experience with State Farm Insurance is non-existent. When I was 18 I tried to get a statefarm policy because I’d never had an automobile policy before. The agent asked a few questions over the phone (they didn’t have statefarm.com back then) and told me that I wasn’t eligible for insurance because I didn’t have previous auto insurance. I didn’t blame them, obviously they want to cover people that aren’t high risks for accidents (18 year old male that has never had car insurance) and I had to go with a smaller company.
A few years later I tried State Farm again, but at this point in time I hadn’t had car insurance consecutively for 6 months so there was no surprise they couldn’t cover me. It was a bit frustrating because the only insurance company people I knew went with was State Farm, and I’d seen how great they were, yet I was always getting passed by for coverage.
At any rate I still have never personally been insured through State Farm and yes I believe their rates can be high if you’ve been in an accident or received moving violations after being insured through them, but, since they cover lower risk drivers to start it helps keep a lot of their costs down and they can pass on savings in other ways. My ex-girlfriend got a good student discount, and a discount for passing drivers eduction classes – and her rates were extremely low. In fact, she turned 21 and her rates dropped again!
Meanwhile, I’m still with Progressive. I think the rates they’ve provided are fair considering the speeding tickets and my current wife’s driving record but still some part of me wants to get a State Farm policy because of how I’ve seen them handle claims and insurance rates in the past.

yeah, I don’t feel the same way about State Farm. They have funny commercials and all, but really the rates I’ve seen have been way to expensive. Maybe they have great customer service, but I don’t use them so I wouldn’t know.
