I had my vehicle for a year or so and kept it fully insured. I ended up going with a low cost provider (remains nameless) that dropped me after I missed a payment and let my insurance lapse. I decided to go without insurance, but in return I wasn’t going to drive the vehicle as I was out of work and no longer needed to make the commute. In Arizona, not having car insurance on a licensed vehicle is a violation and I did not know that. Regardless of the fact that I wasn’t driving the vehicle and I couldn’t prove the vehicle was not being driven i.e. damaged/undriveable I had to file SR22 for 3 years.
Needing to file SR22 was awful as this is something I thought only DUI drivers had to file and other insurance companies were gladly making my rates so expensive it outweighed the cost of my car to have it insured for a year.
My advice to anyone thinking of not carrying insurance on their car would be to make sure you’re allowed to have a licensed vehicle uninsured in your state, otherwise you’re going to have even higher rates when you apply for new insurance.
