Q: I got a door ding in my car when I parked in a parking lot at the mall. Is this something that my insurance company will cover or is it going to be an out of pocket expense?
AIS Answer: Man I hate door dings! Not only are they ugly they are not expensive enough (most of the time) to ever make a claim on your insurance to repair them.
Alright let’s try to answer this question. Will an insurance company cover the damage from a door ding? Yes, if you have Comprehensive coverage they will. However, your deductible will come into play here. Are you carrying a $500 deductible? A $1,000 deductible? My guess is even if you’re holding a $500 deductible that door ding is going to cost less than $500 to repair.
Of course this isn’t always the case. A door ding can cause serious damage to your car, from gashes to big dents, to gouged paint. Don’t get me wrong this can be a VERY expensive fix to return the vehicle to like new condition. If your car requires more than just a pop-out ding fix, then yes file a report with your local police and get an estimate. If you carry the adequate coverage (remember this will go on your record as a claim) and the damage exceeds the deductible, and you feel it needs to be a true claim then you may elect to file a claim.
I would suggest that if you find yourself in this situation call a local insurance agent and ask him a few questions about how a claim like this would affect your rates and the proper steps to take, because in the end it’s ultimately a comprehensive claim and it’s going to be on your record.

No way. Just get a pop a dent, or some other service to come out and pull that ding. If you’ve scratched some paint and it’s really bad then you may want to get your insurance company involved, but otherwise you’re going to have to pay for that small little ding through premium increases for a long time if you decide to notify the insuranc company.
I try and park in the furthest parking spot to avoid door digns.
I’ve parked at the mall numerous times only to come back and find a door ding in my car. It’s so frustrating that people will park right next to you, open their doors quickly and put a dent in your door then leave.
