Q: In California, Can my wife and I have separate insurance policies? She’s driving my truck that’s registered to me only but can she get her own Policy without me on it in order to drive my truck?
AIS Answer: In any state a person can get their own insurance policy even without a specific vehicle being listed. It’s called a Non Owners Insurance Policy . Also, if she has her own vehicle and current auto insurance she will likely be covered for any vehicle she legally operates.
Unless your insurance policy for the truck has your wife listed as a “Named Driver Exclusion“, meaning she’s legally not allowed to drive any vehicle that your insurance policy covers, she should be allowed to operate a vehicle under your policy. However, your insurance company should be made aware (if they aren’t already) that she is a licensed driver in the household.
If you don’t want to add your wife to your policy, or allow her to drive under your policy, then she will have no choice other than getting an insurance policy of her own if she doesn’t have a current auto insurance policy already.
Since every insurance company handles their policies independently and the specifics can change from state to state and company to company, it would be wise to speak directly with your current or prospective insurance company before purchasing or making any changes to an auto insurance policy. Any licensed insurance agent, or insurance company will gladly answer your insurance questions regarding a specific policy, so don’t hesitate to call them and ask.

I have had a few cars on different policies at one time. My wife was allowed to drive a few of them, but none of them on the other policy. This saved a bit of money, but honestly was such a huge hassle paying two auto insurance premiums.
what is the point of this? If you both drive a vehicle, get on the same policy. You’re just going to spend double the money to drive the same cars.
You can save some serious money if you do this the right way. My wife is a terrible driver and she had her own insurance policy on a few of the cars – it worked out pretty well.
a lot of people that are married have separate insurance policies, but I do’t know about on the same veicle…kind of defeats the purpose of saving money.
