I test drove and MKV R32 today and could only help but wonder how much higher my auto insurance would be for the R, over the GTI.
The vehicles are similar in HP, about 50hp difference, but the R32 is about $10k and that seems like it would be so much more expensive to insure.
I liked the R32 a lot more than the GTI, but, I don’t know if it’s worth paying the extra insurance premium to cover this vehicle.

My R32 costs me about $850 for 6 months. I have a few other cars and my wife on the policy too, so the rate is going to be a little bit higher. Plus, I have 2 speeding tickets on my record.
If I was going to estimate and average insurance premium for the R32 for a 25 – 30 year old single male with a clean driving record it would probably be about $100 – $125 per month. This obviously depends on your coverages though as I carry 100/300 plus underinsured and uninsured motorist.
You would save more on car insurance if you were driving a GTI. They’re a few thousand dollars cheaper and you can still mod them to a higher horsepower than the 250hp V6 that comes in the R32. The R32 is a better all around car, but once you factor in car insurance, gas mileage and price you’re looking at a far more expensive vehicle to own.
R32′s are the best all around vehicle for under $40k, but, the insurance company doesn’t treat it like the 5 seater it is. If I would have bought a GTI I could have saved some money, but I didn’t want a GTI.
Some insurance companies are even labeling the R32 on the insurance policy as a GTI…which is absurd, but my insurance company (Progressive) actually shows it as an R32.
Progressive offered a really great price btw. Think it was $550 or so for 6 months.
Volkswagens aren’t that expensive to insure compared to sportier cars.
