I recently bought a full size pickup (over 6,000 gvw) for my business. I plan on taking the tax deduction ($25,000) for this on the first year, but I had to figure out how I was going to have a business vehicle registered under the business only – without spending an unreasonable amount of money on commercial car insurance.
Since I use Progressive for my current vehicles I gave Progressive Commercial a call. Honestly, I figured that I would have to get a ton of quotes because I’ve never heard business insurance of any kind is inexpensive.
The Progressive Commercial Agent on the phone asked me a few quick questions, and some funny ones (i.e. Will you be hauling migrant farm workers, do you run a taxi service, etc) but, these are part of the scenarios they are not interested in at lower rates and certainly do not qualify as personal use.
At the beginning of the conversation I made it clear that this car was for personal use in a business, and would not be driven on average more than 50 miles for a round trip to and from the offie. More specifically I would use it to commute to and from work, there would be no hauling lumber, or towing trailers, or chauffeuring clients – just a commuter.
I can’t speak on behalf of a company that has registered a vehicle, or multiple vehicles for actual on the job business use, but if you’re in a situation like mine with a job that doesn’t demand that you do all of the above or have employees driving the vehicle – personal use only may be the right choice…of course only a licensed insurance agent can tell you that.
In the end I’d received a yearly rate of $1,200. That’s less than $100 per month and fit what I needed perfectly.
Call Progressive Commercial, or any of the other companies that provide business auto insurance and they will help you determine how much coverage you need, and the right coverage for your exact business. It may just cost less than you think.

I used Progressive commercial for my truck too…nice! They have awesome rates.
I agree. Progresive business insurance is probably the cheapest company out there. I use progresive for pretty much all of my insurance (except my house) and they have great customer service. I was only paying like $1k a year for insurance on my company vehicle.
