Q: What is the fine for driving without car insurance in New Jersey?
AIS Answer: The fine for driving without car insurance in the State of New Jersey varies by offense, aside from the fine and penalties it’s a huge risk to drive without at least the minimum requirements, and even then, that coverage is often not enough for most drivers.
When you drive without car insurance you risk personal lawsuits from any accident you’re involved in. If you have assets, you’re likely going to lose them in an at-fault accident to pay for damages. Same goes for your wage that may now be garnished to pay a settlement. It’s the kind of risk that is not worth taking, no matter what the excuse.
New Jersey Driving Without Car Insurance Penalties
The current fine and penalties for driving without car insurance in New Jersey are below, keep in mind laws change and you should always check with your local State Department of Insurance on current insurance laws.
- 1st Offense: Up to a $1,000 fine, community service, $250/yr for 3 years to the DMV, 9 insurance points.
- 2nd Offense: Up to a $5,000 fine, skip community service for now and go directly to jail (mandatory 14 day jail stay), now you can do your community service of whatever the judge recommends but don’t worry you’ll have plenty of time on your hands because your drivers license will be suspended for 2 years or more.

I have a friend who’s lived all over including Florida, Alaska, Oregon, California and New York. Only in New York did he ever carry consistent car insurance. Why? Because in order to have a vehicle you need to carry full coverage car insurance…so I guess the reality is that in order to make sure that people always carry insurance, if they have a vehicle registered in their name that is not insured then their drivers license will be suspended.
I would never drive without insurance. I’ve seen what it can do. A buddy of mine didn’t have car insuranc and he hit a BMW. He got lucky and the only damage was to the vehicles. He ended up paying over $10,000 to fix that guys BMW.
There are way too many people driving without automobile insurance. I think it’s just the most stupid irresponsible thing to do.
dumb dumb dumb
Anything I’ve ever heard about car insurance in New Jersey has been bad. It’s a dense state with a lot of drivers and insurance fraud. Top that off with a higher insurance rate than many states in America and you’re going to have a lot of NJ residents that can’t afford to insure their automobile.
Driving without car insurance is a misdemeanor in most states
New Jersey is not an easy going state when car insurance, or lack of car insurance is in question. If you don’t insurance, get it.
