Michigan Auto Insurance Requirements

Please contact a licensed insurance company for advice specific to your situation.

Q: What are Michigan auto insurance requirements? Is it different in each county or city?

AIS: Michigan is a no-fault insurance state (http://autoinsurancestories.com/no-fault-auto-insurance-states-pip-insurance/) and aside from carrying the necessary no-fault coverage, the minimum requirements are $20,000 Bodily Injury (BI), $40,000 Physical Damage (PD), and $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP).

The requirements are state based, so if you carry at least the minimum above you should meet the requirements. However, talk to an insurance agent or your insurance company about additional coverage in Michigan including Uninsured (UI) and Underinsured Motorist (UM), as well as raising your liability insurance.

If you have valuable possessions including a home, it’s smart to go with as much coverage as you can realistically afford. You can always raise your deductible to $1,000 to offset some of the cost, but having that extra coverage could be the difference between having adequate protection or not.

Please talk to a licensed insurance agent about your options before making a decision regarding your auto insurance policy.
