Are you planning a trip to Mexico? Will you be driving your U.S. Registered vehicle there? If so, you’re likely going to need to pick up extra Mexico auto insurance coverage for the trip.
If you’re going to drive in Mexico you need to be aware of the rules that apply with this country (the same goes for any other country you drive in) and an insurance company that offers auto insurance for Mexico will be able to assist you in the right coverage options and rules as the worst thing you can do is assume that since you have U.S. car insurance that you and your vehicle will be covered in Mexico, this is very likely not the case.
Without the proper car insurance while driving in Mexico you risk losing your vehicle, or even worse – Jail. It’s imperative that you know what type of coverage you have before you cross the border into Mexico with your vehicle as Mexican regulations vary from U.S. insurance laws. Since an auto accident in Mexico is considered a criminal offense you could be jailed if you’re at-fault, or until fault is determined and it’s recommended by many insurance companies in the U.S. that you find out if bail will be covered under your Mexican insurance policy.
Find out if you have a current car insurance policy that will cover travel in Mexico. If not, get a few insurance quotes and buy a policy before you leave.

what a joke. I mean, I know Mexico is its own country but throwing someone in jail because of an auto accident is ridiculous. You don’t see Canada doing that, or for that matter, the U.S. when a Mexican resident is driving in America.
I think the moral of “driving in Mexico” is, hire a cab or walk. Its not like you want to be driving around in Mexico by yourself anyway. Stick to the nice tourist sections, sit on the beach and save driving for the U.S.
stay on the beach…why drive?
