Learners Permit and Driving On Parents Auto Insurance Policy
Q: I’m 16 and I have my learners permit, my dad’s cars are insured under his name, do I need to be under his policy to drive his car while I have a permit.
AIS Answer: The best thing you can do is check with your fathers insurance company since they are the only one’s that can really tell you exactly how they handle drivers with learners permits that are not listed on the policy.
Generally a licensed driver is allowed to drive a vehicle on someone else’s policy if they have permission from the insured (vehicle owner) to operate the vehicle and are not listed as a Named Driver Exclusion precluding them from operating any vehicle on the insurance policy. However, you’re not officially licensed and the rules may be very different for you, depending on the state and insurance company your father is insured through.
Once you become a fully licensed driver the rules can change a bit and you may be required to be listed on your father’s auto insurance policy, or carry your own auto insurance policy.¬† As mentioned, you MUST speak with your father’s insurance company to get specific facts as each state and insurance company rules and laws will vary.

go get your license…I would never let someone drive my car that only had a learneers permit unless I was in it. Not sure how his insurance company is going to want to cover a kid with no license.
I had a drivers license around that age…you should prob just go pass the test and get on your parents insruance policy.
get a license
I don’t blame him. It’s expensive to get insurance when you’re a teenager. You do need to get a license, but after that try and stay on your mom and dads policy if you can.
Can I get car insurance with a learners permit? Will I be covered under my parents insurance policy once I get a permit or is that only if I have a license? Do I have to have my name on their insurance policy or am I covered because I’m their child? What does it cost to get my own auto insurance policy?
