Q: Is AIG and 21st Century Auto Insurance the same company?
AIS Answer: Yes, and no. Technically AIG owns 21st Century Insurance Group and while they were two different companies that operated independently writing car insurance policies (Though AIG did have a large stake 60% in ownership), AIG now owns 21st Century Insurance Group and has renamed 21st Century Insurance Group’s AIG Direct (http://www.aigdirect.com).
Late last year the merger between the two companies was completed when American International Group (AIG) purchased the remaining shares of 21st Century Insurance Group for around $813 million, which amounted to a little over 39% of the company. Although AIG now owns 21st Century Insurance Group , AIG is still a separate business that sells insurance and financial products under the name AIG.
Currently 21st.com is up and running and you can get a quote on auto insurance, but, the site has mentioned that billing will be as AIG Direct appearing on your insurance policy as AIG Direct whether you’re a new or old 21st Century auto insurance customer.
If you want to see the similarities in websites go to 21st.com and then aigdirect.com and see how the main page has a lot of the same attributes including an “average time to get a quote” feature.

I’ve never used either company but I’ve heard good things about 21st in California.
