If My Car Gets Stolen In My Garage Is That Covered Under My Homeowners Insurance Policy Or My Car Insurance Policy?

Please contact a licensed insurance company for advice specific to your situation.

Q: If my car gets stolen in my garage is that covered under my homeowners insurance policy or my car insurance policy?

AIS Answer: This is a very tricky question as homeowners insurance would cover stolen items from a garage, but, you’re dealing with two different lines of insurance and neither one will want to pay the claim considering auto insurance covers automobiles and homeowners insurance covers homes - yet they both apply.

If you carry comprehensive insurance your auto insurance company will cover a stolen vehicle, no matter where it’s located, but, when your home and subsequently a separate line of insurance is involved you may have an issue filing a claim with your auto insurance company. In all reality your auto insurance company will likely honor the claim, though the only way to know is to contact your auto insurance company directly and pose the question.

You should absolutely contact your auto insurance company and ask them if your auto insurance policy covers this scenario, because every insurance company operates differently and it could  be a major issue down the road if both your auto insurance company and homeowners insurance company deny the claim.

Now, in a separate but similar scenario. If your automobile was stolen from your driveway this is NOT a situation where your homeowners insurance will cover your claim.

    1. I would think that your comprehensive coverage would have to take the hit on that one. The car isn’t a part of your house…then again, neither is furniture really, but you don’t have separate couch insurance. My guess is that home insruance would flat out tell you to file it with your car insurance company…it would be kind of an absurd claim. If it fell under your home insurance, seriously, what would be the point of having car insurance to cover something like that? That would be like saying that if you parked in a garage at work and your car was stolen that you’d have to file a claim with the buildings insurance company…yeah…go with the car insurance they should cover that.

    2. I would ask your homeowners insurance, that bill always seems to be so much less than my car insurance.

    3. Im pretty sure your car insurance company would have to pay for that. However, it might be worth a laugh to submit the claim to your homeowners insurance company.
