I live in Ohio and I’ve Been Driving My Mom’s Car - Am I Covered Under Her Auto Insurance?

Please contact a licensed insurance company for advice specific to your situation.

Q: I live in Ohio and I’ve been driving my mom’s car and I want to know if I need to carry my own insurance, or if her insurance will cover me?

AIS Answer: It’s always smart to have your own car insurance, but, if you don’t have a vehicle of your own and you’re allowed to drive your mothers car then her auto insurance policy should cover you in the event of an accident.

If you’re a named driver exclusion on her policy then you are not allowed to operate any insured vehicle covered under her insurance policy. Ask you mom and sit down and look at the policy to make sure that your name is not on the policy as a named driver. You can also talk to her about putting your name on the policy as an insured driver, although it will make her policy more expensive you will be covered for sure.

    1. I used to drive under my parents policy, there was never any problem with the insurance company.

    2. Cincinnati is the best. OK, anyway…you should be fine because people are allowed to drive your car as long as it’s insured and you let them drive it. Call your agent they can tell you whats up with the car insurance.
