Florida Drivers Do Not Forget Jan. 1 2008 You Need PIP Insurance
Under Florida state law all Florida driverswill need to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage of at least $10,000.
The $10,000 coverage pays up to $10,000 in medical bills regardless of fault. This is the coverage that’s required in all no-fault states, Florida being one of them.
The moratorium on PIP insurance in Florida had expired a few months ago (October 1st) and many drivers have either not renewed their PIP coverage, or completely let it lapse. As of January 1st 2008 this coverage will need to be active on all auto insurance policies.
According to reports, more than 1.5 million drivers have let their PIP coverage lapse in Florida. Insurers by law are required to drop policy holders that do not have the adequate coverage, this includes Personal Injury Protection. Along with the dropped coverage, the insurer is also required to report the driver to the state of Florida which in turn will suspend the the driver’s license and registration.

I don’t get this no-fault stuff. I mean, I understand what No-Fault is, but why suddenly you’ve got a few states deciding that they want to make a $10,000 PIP coverage mandatory…seriously, if it was such an amazing bit of coverage wouldn’t it be mandatory in every state?
The more I read about PIP, the more I see how subject it is to auto insurance fraud – how is that fixing the problem? It basically means that since there is “no-fault” between any driver, someone committing fraud can cause an accident, get “hurt” and there’s a payout of up to $10k? That sounds like it’s backfiring more than helping.
in Washington state we don’t have this cr@p…thank god. Just another unecessary car insurance coverage that we don’t need.
That’s amazing that people were so ignorant to think they didn’t have to pay for PIP again even though it clearly states that PIP goes into effect on Jan. 1st 2008.
Florida is still a nice place to live, with or without PIP
