I recently bought a new car and didn’t have it a month when a dump truck had a rock fly out and hit my windshield. It left a big chip which split and spread across my windshield in minutes. I took down the truck’s information as I drove and called to report the incident.
The company the dump truck belonged to said I didn’t have enough information to prove that the truck lost some of the load, so they couldn’t file an insurance claim. I carry a camera in my car for this type of purpose but I was driving and wouldn’t have been able to take pictures of the truck, let alone the rock that hit me. I had to pay for it out of pocket just to avoid having to file a claim on my own.
I think it’s awful that these trucks can drive around with their loads of gravel uncovered and it’s not their problem if they break a windshield or dent someone’s car when it’s my wallet or insurance that takes the biggest hit.
