DUI Auto Insurance?
Q: My friend got a DUI in New York, and wants to know where to find the cheapest DUI insurance.
AIS Answer: There is no such thing as DUI insurance, just higher insurance premiums after a DUI. In fact, after a DUI you often have to file SR-22 for a period of 3 years. During these 3 years you’ll likely be paying a lot more per year for auto insurance than you were before the DUI.
We can’t give you a specific name of an insurance company that will offer you lower rates after a DUI, but companies like GEICO and Progressive are known to take “non-standard” customers (i.e. customers that are in the higher risk category because of factors like lack of current insurance, poor driving record, age, etc) but we cannot guarantee you will be accepted.
Every individual has their own inherent risk associated with being insured, so your friend is going to have to do the smart thing and shop around for insurance.
