Cheapest Cities For Auto Insurance (2007)
Q: What is the cheapest city for auto insurance?
AIS Answer: Auto insurance demographics change often and while the answer to this question is simple, understanding why takes more of an explanation. Since auto insurance underwriting moves quickly to adapt to changes, a certain top 10 city may be nowhere near that placement in a years time for any number of reasons.
The latest data states that Eau Claire, Wisconsin is the cheapest city in America for auto insurance. Yet, the cheapest state in the U.S. to insure a vehicle is North Dakota.
I don’t know the exact reasons why they’re the cheapest, but, since I’ve recently been through both Eau Claire, WI and the majority of North Dakota I can probably give a pretty good argument.
Eau Claire is a very pretty town of around 65,000 people located near Chippewa Falls that’s home to a segment of the University of Wisconsin. When I was driving through it wasn’t congested at all, no real big city to speak of and the housing was spread out - meaning less drivers in one location. These are all very good reasons to have lower car insurance rates. Big cities like Madison and Milwaukee are not close enough to affect the rates of those living in Eau Claire.
Now, North Dakota. By far and away the most desolate drive on I-94 (next to Eastern Montana), with mostly large farms and small towns every 50 or so miles. While there aren’t a lot of towns close together in North Dakota, it does have fairly large cities. Bismarck (University of North Dakota) and Fargo being two of them. Both of these cities can be congested at times and the speed limit on the interstate through the majority of the towns is 75 mph. I’m guessing that if Fargo was a little bit smaller it would be right up there in top 5, instead Bismarck, ND takes #4.

…what I get from this is that any place you wouldn’t actually want to live is going to be less expensive for car insurance. Looks about right.
I’m not surprised most of the east coast (New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts) did not make this list.
