Thanks to a new bill that passed through the Georgia Legislature last week allowing insurance companies the ability to raise premiums without state approval – Georgian’s could be looking at higher car insurance rates.
Insurance companies contend the new bill is fair and allows for them to help keep rates in line with losses due to more expensive accidents and competition online. Basically, they’re saying that certain sectors and competition are costing them more money than it should and there isn’t as much profit as there used to be.
This new bill is facing some serious criticism from state officials. It may have been something that the insurance companies felt they needed, but many argue the end result is not only higher car insurance rates for Georgia residents (some who can barely afford car payments/gas), but the increased risk that many of the poorer residents will choose to forego car insurance completely because their rates have increased beyond what they can realistically afford.
For Georgia residents that wish to contact their Insurance Commissioner John W. Oxendine (who is also wary of the possible implications with this new bill) we’ve included his contact information below.
