Q: Do insurance companies allow you to have different coverages for different cars under the same policy?
AIS Answer: Many do, yes. There are plenty of policyholders in the U.S. that have more than one vehicle, and often it doesn’t make financial sense to have the exact same car insurance coverage on every insured vehicle.
For instance.
Let’s say you’re a male that has 3 vehicles, 1 of which is a daily driver for you, the other is a daily driver for your wife and you also own a roadster for use on sunny days, only. The 2 vehicles you drive the most would warrant the most coverage (not in every case obviously), and the roadster with limited use, depending on value, may need less – especially if it’s sitting for months in a garage without use.
In the instance where a vehicle is sitting and not being driven regularly, liability-only coverage is an option. However, if you have a lien on your vehicle from a lender, this is likely not an option since your lender may have minimum coverage requirements that include comprehensive and collision and specific deductibles.
While there are scenarios that show you can have different coverage amounts (and types) on different vehicles, it may or may not be right for you. Only you and a licensed insurance agent/company can determine the proper amount of coverage for your specific needs.
