Q: What is California’s Low Cost Auto Insurance Program?
AIS Answer: California is a large and growing state that has recognized a problem with uninsured drivers and designed a program to address it, the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (CLCA).
The California  Low Cost Auto Insurance Program is not for everyone, but it does help California residents with low incomes and a good driving record obtain affordable liability-only auto insurance, instead of the costly alternative (to both the driver and the state) of driving without auto insurance.
How the Low Cost Auto Insurance Program Works
Since this plan is not subsidized by California taxpayers, each applicable county sets its own rates to cover losses. California promotes this program as an affordable alternative to driving uninsured, with premiums around $400/yr.
The basic requirements for obtaining this coverage is 1 person can make up to $25,525/yr and 2 people $34,225. There requirements for 4 and 8 people as well, so if you’re interested in reading more about that you can read the Applicant Income Eligibility Requirement. To qualify for coverage each applicant must also be at least 19 years of age,¬¨‚Ć have no more than one at-fault property damage only -¬¨‚Ć or more than 1 point for a moving violation in the last 3 years. Also, the insured vehicle cannot be valued at more than $20,000.
