Everyone knows that talking on a cellphone while driving is dangerous, and states are acting accordingly with swift bans on the use of cellphones while driving. However, many states (and people) are slow to react on an equally dangerous activity – texting while driving.
Below is a list of states with current bans on texting while driving. The list will be updated as more states join the ban. Even if your state or city is not listed, texting while driving is very dangerous and should be avoided.
- Arizona (PHOENIX): The City of Phoenix has imposed a ban since oct 20th. 2007 prohibiting drivers from text messaging while driving.
- New Jersey: March 1, 2008 New Jersey passed a bill making texting while driving a $100 – $250. No Points will be taken off a drivers license.
- New Hampshire: On March 18th, 2008 legislators in New Hampshire voted to make it illegal for drivers to send text messages on type on laptops, or other computer devices while driving. Drivers would face a $100. Talking on a cell phone is still allowed.
- Michigan (DETROIT): Detroit city council banned text messaging while driving on the 12th of March, 2008.
Pending Text Messaging Legislation:
- California: July 1st, 2008 marks the first day of the cell phone ban in vehicles. Fines will be assessed for using a phone without a hands-free device – however, there is no law against text messaging.
- New York: Currently 2 bills going through state legislature fining drivers $100 for texting while driving.
- Tennessee: Lawmakers are pushing a texting while driving ban with a $50.00 fine through state senate.
- Wisconsin: Has a bill going through Wisconsin Senate to ban all texting while driving in the state of Wisconsin.

Im pretty sure you can’t text while driving in Beaverton Oregon either.
it’s so annoying to see a car swerving and when you pass them you see a lady in the drivers seat looking down at her cell phone texting.
text messaging in the car is not what a driver should be doing
It’s so much harder to text driving then it is to call, and calling is illegal in many states so imagine how quiclkly states will ban texting.
its just easier to call then it is to text someone or you can just wait till your done driving
