Q: What is the average cost of car insurance in America and how close is that to what I’ll pay for car insurance?
AIS Answer: The latest statistics are from 2005 where the average expenditure (cost) for auto insurance across the United States was $829 down 1.3% from 2004′s average cost of $840.
What these figures are, is an average. And you can’t be specific with an average. You can get close, but it’s likely not going to match your current situation.
If you live in North Dakota, Iowa, South Dakota, Idaho, Kansas, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Wyoming, or Maine you’re going to pay considerably less on average than you would in the most expensive auto insurance states New Jersey, Washington D.C. New York, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Florida, Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut or Nevada.
There are so many factors that go into an auto insurance premium that even basing it on a state isn’t necessarily going to save you money. You’re always doing yourself a favor when you shop around for auto insurance and get as many quotes as possible from different companies. Independent agents have access to hundreds of insurance companies that write policies in your area and are a great way to find discounts and save money where you can.

…I pay like $4,000 a year in car insurance premiums for 4 vehicles. Honestly that’s not bad, though I don’t think I fit into any kind of average car insurance customer model.
ND is cheap! Maybe California will try that
I don’t agree with that average. There must be a lot of people out there with like half a broken car paying insurance not to drive it because looking at my premium, it’s nowhere near that average.
depends on the state, but I’ve seen around $1,300/yr
