I live in the middle of a major metropolitan city on the west coast and I was not in the least bit surprised to see that my rates were higher than smaller towns, however, I was surprised to see my rates go up in areas that had less traffic.
I’ve moved around quite a bit over the last few years and when I made a move from a smaller city just outside the metro area to a rural city I actually saw a spike in my insurance rates. It was actually about $50 more per month to live in my own house in a rural area than it was to live in an apartment outside the city.
I asked my insurance agent what the deal was with that. Since we were just doing a change of address it should have actually been cheaper in that area. However, she said that the zip we gave her is just a higher rate and she didn’t know why.
So, now I live downtown and I haven’t updated my address from the rural area because I know how much traffic is down here and I really, really, don’t want to have to pay the added cost of switching zip codes.

if you’re moving to a new city, get a car insurance quote before you leave and see what it’s going to cost to live in that city. You could save hundreds of dollars by doing homework.
when I move to a different city I get insurance before I move, well, almost before I move, more like right as I’m moving. This is to make sure I have insurance that I can afford n the area I’m moving too.
