We moved in New York several years ago and something got lost in the address change and move and our insurance had lapsed by a week.
When we called to reinstate our atuo insurance the company said they could not. We called every other insurance company we could think of and not a single one would insure us because of the recent lapse.
Finally we called the insurance that is mandatorily offered by the state of New York and they were able to insure us at the rate of $4,000 a year – which is not cheap by any means. For an idea on how awful this premium is, we only drove an ’88 Chevy Corsica that barely ran and had to have full coverage as required by the state. It was absolutely ridiculous but lesson learned, I will not let my car insurance lapse again.

You must have had something else wrong with your driving record. I too let my insurance lapse last year for 7 days. Another insurance company accepted me with an online quote of far less than $4000 per year. Based on info from others I’ve spoken to, insurance companies will insure you as long as your lapse is less than 15 days. You should request a copy of your driving record and your credit report to make sure that you actually know the reason why you were rejected by insurance companies.
you DO NOT want to lapse on insurance in NY. THey are really strict with auto insurance policies there and you’ll prob lose your registration if you F around with insurance.
