Q: I’m over 55, should I go with a company like AARP for auto insurance or are there other companies that cater to older drivers?
AIS Answer: AARP has built a name for itself in the senior market providing discounts on many things, one of them being auto insurance.
The Hartford (the only approved insurance company that works with AARP) has over 20 years experience providing auto and home insurance plans to senior citizens through AARP’s program.
According to the Hartford you can receive a quote online for auto insurance, but, in order to purchase a plan you must be a member of AARP. You’ll need to check with your regional AARP and determine whether joining AARP is worth the savings (if any) on the auto insurance policy through The Hartford.
Although some companies may not “specialize” in providing auto insurance plans exclusively for seniors, it doesn’t mean you can’t save money. Companies like State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, Progressive, etc would be more than happy to write an insurance policy for a good, safe driver. So, be sure to compare as many quotes from different companies as possible.

I’m not sure about providing the best rates for seniors because Progressive just provides low rates period. You may want to get a quote from them after Hartford and compare prices, Progresive usually comes out on top.
AARP offers some great discounts for seniors, and if you’re already a member why not get their auto insurance? Makes sense.
seniors, as long as they aren’t too old, will get decent rates from any company. It’s the 70+ year olds that start to really get the higher rates.
